USHSTCA Members' Team Wins National Tournament

USHSTCA Member, Emilio Gonzalez, led the Miami Sunset High School boys tennis team to the title at the National High School Boys Invitational Tennis Tournament held on April 6th & 7th at the Overland Park Racquet Club in Overland Park, Kansas. The format of the tournament was six singles and three doubles matches in a head-to-head, dual match form.

In addition to Miami Sunset, team participating included: Memphis University High, Memphis Tennessee (#13 in the USA Today 2000 Final rankings); St. Xavier H.S., Louisville, Kentucky (#14); Rockhurst High School, Kansas City, Missouri (#18); Pembroke Hill Academy, Kansas City Missouri (#23) and S.M. Northwest H.S., Shawnee Mission, Kansas.

St. Xavier is coached by USHSTCA member, Joseph Kroh.

Miami Sunset edged Memphis with a final score of 31 to 26. St. Xavier finished with 24. Rockhurst and Pembroke each had 13, while SMNW ended with one point.

Miami Sunset ended the season ranked #6 in the nation in the USA Today 2000 Final rankings.

Sunset's Boys and Girls also won the Florida State Championships (4- A division) for the second consecutive year. The boys took all singles and doubles positions, while the girls broke a Florida State record of six consecutive titles -- not an easy task to do in Florida. Since the tournament was held in Altamonte Springs, Fl. close to Orlando, coach Gonzalez celebrated by taking the teams to Disney World.

Coach Gonzalez has been coaching for 28 years, and traveled to attend the USHSTCA's first workshop in Atlanta this past Spring.

Congratulations to Coach Gonzalez and Coach Kroh for their great seasons!
