| Below was the itinerary for our first
coaching workshop, held the weekend of February 17-18,
held in the Atlanta area at the Racquet Club of the South, Norcross, GA. To keep costs low, we scheduled sessions to allow for convenient travel time on Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. |
USHSTCA 2001 Pre-Season Coaches Workshop Agenda
As a pre-season tune-up for high school coaches, the USHSTCA offered a two-day workshop which covered the following basics which take a coach from day one of his or her season through the play-offs. *Denotes on-court session

Sport Science
An overview of the sports
sciences as they apply to tennis: Biomechanics, Sports Medicine,
Physiology, Nutrition, Motor Learning, Psychology, Physics
1:00-1:45 -- Singles Video/Lunch
2:00-3:15 -- Planning
the Season*
Recommended strategies for
planning a season of drills and practices based on a pre-season
phase, pre-competitive season phase and in-season phase.
3:30-4:15 --
Singles and Doubles Strategies*
A review of fundamental
strategies and tactics, based on matchplay statistics.
4:30-5:15 --
Conditioning, Injury Treatment and Prevention
Suggestions for team fitness
and footwork workouts. An overview of common injuries, and
recommendations for preventing and treating them.

Sunday
9:00-9:50 am -- Strokes
and Shots*
A review of both the
fundamentals and the latest international research which suggests
that many fundamentals are obsolete.
10:00-10:50 am --
Sports Nutrition Basics for Coaches
A review of what to eat and
drink before, during and after matches; menu suggestions;
fast-food options; etc.
11:00-12:00 pm --
Georgia Professional Tennis Association Drill Session*
A review of how to develop
drills for any task and how to avoid interfering with one skill
(e.g. motor skills or strokes) while working on another
(conditioning or mental toughness). A must for coaches.
1:00-2:00 -- Lunch/Doubles Video

Coaching
Basic advice on team building,
discipline, coaching styles, team rules, transition to college,
etc.
