USHSTCA Workshops

None Scheduled for 2006

The USHSTCA provides coaching workshops focusing on topics that are germane to high school tennis coaches.

Unlike workshops which focus almost exclusively on teaching strokes (rather than coaching players), USHSTCA workshops provide a coordinated approach to coaching tennis teams. While we include strokes and strategies in our lectures, our workshops revolve around a unifying theme which is emphasized during each lecture -- help your team members become players, rather than just hitters.

A main differentiating point between USHSTCA High School Coaching Workshops and other similar educational offerings is our emphasis on the physical education principles of problem-solving, games-based teaching and the guided discovery method of learning, rather than the command style or directed method of learning predominant in almost all other American teaching courses. This mirrors the difference between teaching and coaching.

Our workshop has been called the most sophisticated tennis workshop offered in the U.S. after the USTA's week-long Elite Coaches Workshop -- but the information is geared toward and delivered for use by the average high school tennis coach. It is not re-cycled information originally aimed at commercial tennis teachers.

Finally, our workshop lectures are not taught by former touring pros or current commercial teaching pros promoting personal systems and who do so with no physical education or other sport science background. The workshop leader is USHSTCA executive director, Steve Milano. The information presented in our workshops is objective, cutting edge and world-class and generally not available en masse in the United States. Our workshops look at the work of such leading sports scientists as Richard Schoenborn of Germany, Louis Cayer of Canada, Drs. Jeff Chandler, Ben Kibler and Jim Loehr of the U.S., Dr. Bruce Elliot of Australia and Vic Braden of the U.S.
